A Campus Alive: The Creative Campus Enters a New Chapter

 

There is a new energy moving through The Creative Campus at Goddard.

 

What was once a college facing closure is rapidly becoming something new: a vibrant commons where learning, creativity, culture, community, and civic life are finding renewed expression.

 

Over the past several months, the campus has hosted artists, educators, community leaders, nonprofits, conferences, performances, and visitors from across Vermont and beyond. Together, they are helping shape a new vision for what a campus can become.

 

Vermont Leaders Gather to Explore the Future of Campuses

 

On May 13th, The Creative Campus hosted the statewide symposium:

 

The Future of Vermont's Campuses: Protecting and Preserving Vermont's College Campuses Through Complicated Transformations.

 

Leaders from across Vermont—including representatives from the Governor's Office, state agencies, housing organizations, preservation groups, higher education, philanthropy, and community development organizations—gathered on campus to explore a timely question:

 

What role might college campuses play in the future vitality of our communities?

 

Throughout the day, participants examined how campuses can evolve beyond their traditional roles and become centers of housing, economic development, education, culture, creativity, and civic life.

 

The symposium reinforced a growing understanding that campuses are not simply collections of buildings.

 

They are forms of civic, cultural, educational, and economic infrastructure deeply connected to the life of place.

 

The conversations begun that day continue and are helping position Vermont as a leader in reimagining campuses for the future.

 

The Goddard Institute of Dramatic Arts Launches

 

This month also marks an important milestone for the arts on campus.

 

The Goddard Institute of Dramatic Arts (GIDA) is presenting its inaugural production, Lender Driver on June 18th. launching an exciting season of performing arts rooted in the long creative history of Goddard. GIDA is developing new opportunities for actors, directors, teachers, students, and audiences to engage with the performing arts.

The production is more than a performance.

 

It is a signal that the historic Haybarn Theatre and the broader campus are once again becoming places where artists gather, create, and share their work with the community.

 

A Growing Hub for Learning, Creativity, and Community

 

The Creative Campus now hosts an expanding ecosystem of activity:

• Nonprofit organizations serving youth and their families

• Arts and cultural programming

• Conferences, workshops, and retreats

• Community gatherings and performances

• Campus housing and overnight accommodations

• Meeting and event spaces

• Creative and educational initiatives

• Partnerships with local and state organizations

 

Recent events have brought hundreds of visitors to campus, including statewide conferences and gatherings that recognize the unique role campuses can play in strengthening rural communities.

 

Looking Ahead

 

This is only the beginning.

 

Plans are underway to expand educational offerings, arts programming, housing opportunities, conferences, cultural events, and community partnerships. 

 

At the heart of this work is a simple idea:

 

A campus can be more than an institution.

 

It can be a commons.

 

A place where people come together to live, create, learn, celebrate, and imagine new possibilities for our shared future.
